taking time out

February 24th, 2008 Fr. Peter Giovanoni No comments

Next weekend we will be going on our Spring retreat. Retreat are a good way to focus on our relationship with God. We of course relate to God all the time, for He is everywhere at all times. We on the other hand are not as multitasking as God. We are a body-soul unity. What happens to one part of our being impacts the other parts. To physically move oneself away from the things that are good but not God for the sake of approaching God will orient our whole being more to God. You can do this by having a special prayer spot in your room, going to a chapel or church to pray, taking a walk in a quiet place, or by going on retreat. Making a physical space for God helps us make a space for Him in our heart.

Alarms

February 13th, 2008 Fr. Peter Giovanoni No comments

We began Lent with a memorable day. The fire alarm went off during our noon Mass in the Marvin Center. I guess I had too much fire and brimstone in the homily. But not wanting to pass on an opportunity, we can also think of Lent as an alarm in our spiritual life. Don’t panic, but take action. We can always be drawing closer to God, but sometimes we get in a comfortable pattern and stay put. The Lent alarm has gone off. Where in my life is God not present? What action am I going to take?
