About Us

Caught Up In Faith is the official newsletter of the GW Newman Catholic Student Center. It is published quarterly by the students, and contains stories and reflections on the recent and upcoming events. This blog serves as the online presence for the newsletter, and will be used for in-between postings and regular reflections as we continue to grow. The following was printed in the very first issue of the newsletter to describe its title and purpose:

As this is the first issue of what we hope to be a long
tradition of newsletters, it is only appropriate to explain the
selection of the title.

The name, Caught Up In Faith, has several meanings.
First and foremost, it is a statement of our desire for our
faith life. We do not simply want to experience our faith
once or twice a week. Rather, we want to live out our faith so
much that we are caught up in it like a fish in a net.

The name is also reminiscent of the Biblical story
of Peter and Andrew’s call to discipleship by Jesus. The
gospel of Matthew tells us this:

“As [Jesus] was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two
brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to
them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
At once they left their nets and followed him.”
Matthew 4:18-20

Like Peter and Andrew, we have been caught in the nets of
Jesus. As Catholics, we also strive to take on our own call to
discipleship and to become fishers of men ourselves. We
live our daily lives looking for opportunities to “catch” others
and bring them into the faith.
We have been brought together into a community not
unlike that of the first disciples. We are young and still learning
about ourselves and our faith through Jesus. In times of
sadness and joy, we turn to our fellow disciples—our friends—
looking for strength and support.

In this way, as we go about our daily lives at GW, learning
and growing with each passing day, we do so with the sense of
an ever-growing community of believers. We are each “fishers
of men” and when we cast our nets among our friends, we
spread our faith to one more person on this campus.
